WHAT'S GROWIN'

This page is information about the nepenthes i grow in my personal collection. I will be adding detailed information on how each nepenthes species or hybrid are being grown wheather it be in the greenhouse, in grow chambers or basically outside in the back yard. I will update this page every month to show you what is new and what is working for me i.e potting mixes, fertilizers irrigation just to name a few.

My Nepenthes

                                N. Alata x Maxima

This hybrid has the characteristics of both parents. It has the alata shape and maxima parisotme color and markings on the pitcher. I was given this plant from my buddy of mine Manny Herrera from Florida. This one came to me with no pitchers and six leaves. Growing this one is a sinch. i grow mine in bright light not direct sunlight in the greenhouse. humidity is at 60%-70% during the day and 80%-100% at nite. I have always liked this simple hybrid ever since i saw it when i first started this hobby. I havent seen alot of this hybrid out in circulation. It is a very good starter plant for any beginner out there. I'm pretty sure this one would do well with low humidity as a house plant with twice a day misting once in the morning and once at night with long fiber sphagnum as a top dressing to add more humidity around it. I would imagine the pitchers on this one would get a little bigger then what they are now. If you do stumble on this plant try picking one up. It's worth it.

                             N. Splendiana x x Hookeriana

I got this plant about two years ago from ebay. It was part of a auction that had eight differant neps. This one grows well year round. Not once has there been stress on the plant during winter with lows in the low 40's. This one grow like a weed pushing out basals left and right from the rood sytem and from the long  viney stem. The pitchers on this female can get all the way up to 12 inches. It grows in humidity of 70% and higher. I had this one outside once and it really didn't put out any pitchers with the low humidity. I have done many basal cutting from this plant and it always strikes every time. I have only seen this plant a few times and not much is known where it originated from. It is a fast grower for me and loves to put out basals. this year i will be putting only a few in the web store so look out for this one.

N. Ventricosa x Aristolochioides

One unusual looking hybrid created from Exotica Plants has the characteristics of both parents.  It Carries the blotching of ventricosa on the pitcher and the dark  constricted paristome of an aristolochioides. This is a fast grower that puts out alot of basals one after the other. I keep this one in typical highland conditions with high humidity with cool nights. It loves to vine and clings on to anything that it can get it's tendrils wrapped around. It likes bright shaded light with cool days with temps ranging no more then 90 dagrees. The pitchers seem really woody and thick. You could try growing this one out in the open or as a house plant. I'm pretty sure it will do well do to it's parentage.

                                                                                                                       N. Maxima x Talengensis

A great hybrid to have in any collection. This hybrid grows very quick and everytime it puts out a whole new pitcher they seem to always get bigger and bigger. The size of my current pitcher is about seven inches in hight and very bulbus on the top and narrow on the bottom. Knowing the two parentage in this hybrid maxima is a very fast grower and seems to speed up the growth for this plant. I got this one through a purchase from a local grower/friend of mine that suggested this one to me when i really got into this hobby. I think it was worth every penny spent. If confronted with this plant grab it as fast as you can and enjoy it. It is so worth it.

 N. Alata

A very well known species which has many forms from elongated to spoted and even a giant form. This is a very easy one to grow as a house plant or outside on a sunny deck. A very forgiving plant in which i have actually had this one sitting out in one hundred degrees and still survived with hadrly any water or moisture in the soil. People who are in this hobby sometime brush this one off but this one was one of my very first plants which to this day i still enjoy growing. It is a fast grower and easy to acclimate to a new enviroment. A good candidate for a beginner as well. Grow this one in very bright light and mist it once a day. You'll see how fast this one grows.

 N. Fusca tyical dark

Grows as a regular highlander.  It has markings like a n. maxima but on more of cylindrical shaped pitcher. Thel eaves on this plant look like up side down hearts. The paristome can range in color from being dark purple or brown to a flared paristome with a light green color to it and with striping. Also it's hood has more of a pointier tip to it then a maxima. This is a fast grower in the greenhouse for me. I grow this one in bright shaded lite with alot of humidity. It started off slow but as soon as i increased to humidity pitchering was no problem after that.

N. Maxima x Sanguiana (x Diomodes)

This grows fast in greenhouse producing large leaves. It's pitchers are thin but can take low humidity maybe because of its highland parentage. The plant can get very big producing dark brown pitchers with a chocolate colord paristome ranging in sizes from five to 12 inches in hight. Seed grown from Sam Estes there are different variations in this plants. i have another one that produces a light green pitcher with the same chocolate brown paristome. Try looking for this plant for i think it is worth having in any nepenthes collection.

 N. Ventricosa x Spectabilis

Ventricosa x Spectabilis is a wonderful and nice looking hybrid that grows well as a lowland, intermidiate or highland conditions. I got this plant very small and put it though alot of bad conditions ranging with low and high heat to wet and less light. Some how or another this one keeps coming back. This is great plant to start off with for beginners. The pitchers it produces are very beautiful with pale cream ptichers and dark markings. Also to top it all off it produces a dark red paristome with candy caine striping. Giving it alot of light it will actually turn darker red and can produce  nice fat pitchers. I've gotten my  plant to produce five inch pitchers and they seem to get bigger every time.

 N. Maxima x Veitchii

This was actually one of my first nepenthes that i purchased at a plant show at Cal State Fullerton.  It produces medium sized pitchers with a striped paristome and pink cream pitcher. The pitchers can get big but i haven't been able to produce the same pitcher size from when I first got this plant. It produces thick hairy leaves that can take all humidity fluctuations. I have also grown this plant outdoors under shade and bright light which has also performed nicely. This specific hjybrid was not produced by any known nepenthes nursery but was produced by a indipendant grower that donated this plant in which the universrity had made cuttings. But i do have other plants that were purchased from Kim Magnuson which could be from BE or EP. They to have different characteristics. Easy plant to grow but a steady grower for me.

N. (Veitchii x Tevyii) xTruncata

I got this plant off of ebay two years ago and has grown some what slow for me. It was from Kim Magnuson in Hawaii at Tristans. I asume this one was from EP due to the time frame and when most of these plants were being produced. I am expecting alot out of this plant because of its parentage. So far so good! It seems to like alot of humidity and bright light. I was told that this hybrid gets pretty big. We will soon find out as soon as it gets bigger in time. I will keep you updated on this plant.

 N. Maxima x Truncata

This is a real simple hybrid that puts out some really nice pitchers. I acquired this one from Tristons on ebay two year ago. This plant came to me at eight inches in diameter and was first grown in a fish tank. When it got to big it moved into the greenhouse and  grew very fast. The pictures shown are of uppers an lowes. The upers get about a foot long with a wide nice golden colord paristome and nice lime green pitcher. The lowers are very nice as well. They two are some what lime green with a bit of  dark red blotching. The paristome is somewhat toothy in comparison it's uppers. It is  a very  nice hybrid to have in any collection if you like big pitchers. This one can take temps all the way down to te mid  30's with no ill effects. Surely a highlander!

  N. Thorelii x Aritolochiodes

This is a very nice hybrid and easy to grow. This was give to me as  unrooted cutting from a very good friend which he grew this plant outdoors. It was originated from EP which are known to make wonderful hybrids. The rooting process didnt take long for it to root. This hybrid likes it cool and humid and is a steady grower. i have two cuttings of this plant and plan to grow one out doors and see how it does for me. It is worth getting for your collection. The pitchers are about two inches tall and may get a little bigger. They produce the sme shape of aristo but colorization as thorelii.
